NOTE FROM SYLVIE: " I would like to thank you again for everything you've been doing for us. I wanted the Cafe to be a great place so that people will enjoy coming and have fun here. I started distributing leaflets to advertise the Cafe Gallery. Thanks to you several artists have contacted me regarding showing work at the Cafe. This encouraged me a lot! I appreciate your support. I think we can make West End a great place for everyone as a Cafe and as an art Gallery." - Sylvie, Malden, MA - Oct 2004.

PLEASE NOTE: Sylvie's Cafe gallery has closed. - - Hello Malden, This is to inform you that West End Cafe Gallery owners Sylvie and Danny have decided to close their business for good for some personal reasons. Sylvie would like to thank you for your support and patronage. She is very disappointed about the closing as she knew that it could have been a great place for everyone as a cafe and also as an art gallery. I'm sure some of you probably feel the same way. Thank you for your attention. Best wishes - Sand T , Dec 2004.

West End Café Gallery (Malden, MA) presents abstract works by Malden artist Sand T. The exhibition runs Sept 25 through Oct 23, 2004. A reception with Music, Art and Poetry Reading has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 5, 2004 from 5 – 8pm. Mike Uzzi (aka SMARTYPANTS) will start the evening DJ-ing electronic music, followed by the improvisational live band AUDDITY, poetry will be read throughout the evening. The Cafe counter will be open during the reception.

Artworks on display include paintings and works on paper selected from Sand T’s series - Landscapes and Abstractions. This body of work reflects the environment in a mysterious and spiritual manner. Sand T says about the work, “In our surrounding environment, we often see abstractions in landscapes or vice versa.” Landscapes and Abstractions, wide in a vocabulary of marks, rich colors, and a multi-layered effect that emerges from this process is at once mysterious and introspective. This body of work creates a sense of space that is oddly familiar and enigmatic. A sense of churning warmth and swirling passion radiates from them. Works on display leave the viewer to their own interpretations.

Sand T completed her Graduate and Museum Studies from Tufts University and the Museum School with a MFA in 1997. She is a multidisciplinary visual artist who has been actively creating and exhibiting her works nationally and internationally for two decades. Painting, mixed media collage, digital documentary photography and art installations are her working mediums.

Currently, Sand T’s artworks can be seen in “PHOTO LAB(oratory),” a photography show juried by Leslie K. Brown, at artSPACE@16 in Malden; “The Persistence of Becoming,” a multi media exhibit co-curated by Malden artist Lauren O’Neal and Alex Metral at The Nave Gallery in Somerville; and “No0965859F” a multi media exhibition series at Westbrook Artists Site(WAS) in Winterset, Iowa. Mike Uzzi, aka SMARTYPANTS (Somerville, MA) was trained as a classical percussionist at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, but somewhere along the way he found himself more interested in producing and DJ-ing electronic music. He has become a staple of the underground techno scene in both New York and Boston, playing alongside some of the biggest names of the international techno community including Stewart Walker, Sammy Dee, and Dinky. As a producer, Mike has had tracks released by the esteemed German label Traum Schallplatten, as well as Sentrall Records and Adhesive Records. His debut solo EP will be released this fall on the local label Zero G Sounds. Currently, Mike can be found DJing and playing live sets with the rest of the Unlockedgroove collective every Saturday night at River Gods in Cambridge and on the third Wednesday of every month for the Zero G Sounds events at the Phoenix Landing in Central Square.

Auddity (Medford, MA) was formed by the three members Eric Dahlman, Michaeal Knoblach and Erik Nugent. Auddity improvise music by drawing upon a vast array of international, jazz and experimental influences to create a spacious and frequently ethereal soundscape. This music is created in part by drawing upon the band’s huge collection of over a thousand instruments.
